Where you walk, not whether you walk

You have been told to get outside. A different question: once outside, does it matter where? It has been tested the awkward way - hold the walk constant and change only the ground it crosses: green in one condition, a built-up street in the other - and the green route came out ahead on how people felt afterwards. Measured straight after a single walk, in mostly young, healthy volunteers. So the honest version is small and specific. The setting is a lever you already have, and pulling it costs nothing.

Limitations & how to read this number
This is the review's written summary of all 24 studies rather than a single pooled number, so it gives you a consistent direction and not a size. Almost every study was one session of between fifteen minutes and an hour, with people asked how they felt immediately afterwards - so none of this is about how you feel next week. The volunteers were healthy adults with no physical or mental health conditions, and two thirds of the samples were university students. The direction was not consistent for everything measured: results for depression, tranquillity and calmness were mixed. And the reviewers rated the risk of bias in these studies as high, partly for an unavoidable reason - you always know which route you are walking, so nobody in any of these studies was blinded.

Limitations & how to read this number
This is a pooled difference in scores on a mood questionnaire, and the review does not name the scale it was pooling, so there is no honest way to translate 3.28 into anything you can picture - what it establishes is a direction that held up consistently, not an amount. It comes from five studies and 697 people, measured immediately after a single walk, in healthy volunteers. One thing is deliberately missing from this page: the review's largest pooled figure, for anxiety, is not quoted anywhere here. The studies behind it disagreed so sharply with each other, and the combined number came out so implausibly large, that printing its size would give you a false idea of how big this effect is.

How to actually do it
Do not add a walk. Take one you already take - the commute leg you do on foot, the trip to the shop, the dog, the loop you already do at lunch - and change the route rather than the walk. Aim for the greenest ground you can reach on the way: a park rather than the main road, the river path rather than the ring road, the street with trees rather than the one with traffic. The studies here ran between fifteen minutes and an hour, so a genuinely short detour is inside what was tested. And the bar for "green" is lower than you would guess - the natural settings in these studies included ordinary urban parks and, in one case, a regenerated landfill site. You are not being asked to find a forest. You are being asked to stop defaulting to the grey route.

In the same five pooled studies, people also reported less anger and hostility after the activity in the natural setting than after the same activity in the urban setting (mean difference -0.57, 95% CI -0.79 to -0.35)
The same caveats as the energy finding apply: an unnamed mood-questionnaire scale, so a direction rather than a size you can picture; five studies and 697 people; and a single walk with the questionnaire filled in immediately afterwards. This one had low disagreement between studies, which is a point in its favour.

In a separate systematic review and meta-analysis of greenspace and physical health, people living in areas with more greenspace had lower odds of all-cause mortality than people living in areas with less (OR 0.69, 95% CI 0.55-0.87)

This compares places, and the people who live in them - not settings. People in greener areas also tend to have more money, cleaner air, less traffic noise and more room to move, and no study of this kind can pull those apart from the greenery itself, so nothing here shows that a greener route does anything for you. The pooled figure rests on only four studies, and those four disagreed with each other almost completely - the review's own measure of disagreement was 96 out of 100. The n counts people followed in those four studies, not deaths.

This is the honest other half of the same review, and it is the reason this page does not call greenery medicine. Where greener areas did look better - for diabetes, for death rates, for birth outcomes - they did not look better for everything, and several of those pooled comparisons came out with no difference at all. The reviewers say plainly that a number of their analyses were limited by poor study quality and high levels of disagreement between studies.

Where, not whether - what these studies actually compared
Most research on this compares people who spend time outdoors with people who do not, which tells you almost nothing, because those are different people leading different lives. The review this page rests on did the harder thing. Across twenty-four experimental studies, the same physical activity - almost always a walk, sometimes a jog or a run - was carried out in a green natural setting and in an urban one. In eighteen of the twenty-four, the same people did both routes; the remaining six compared two separate groups. Commercial districts, historical downtowns, city centres and residential streets on one side; forests, woodland, grassland, nature reserves and urban parks on the other. Both arms were outdoors. Both arms were moving. The only thing that changed was the scenery. Results favoured the natural setting for anxiety, anger and hostility, energy, general affect and positive engagement.
What the numbers do and do not tell you
Six outcomes could be combined statistically, and all six favoured the natural setting. The steadiest of them was vigour - how energetic people felt afterwards - where five studies of 697 people agreed closely with one another. Those five are not a separate piece of research: the twenty-four-study statement above is the review's written summary of everything it found, while each combined figure rests on its own smaller subset of those same studies. They are two views of one review, not two independent confirmations of each other. But these are differences in scores on a mood questionnaire whose scale the review never names, so a number like 3.28 cannot honestly be translated into anything you can picture. There is one number this page deliberately will not print: the combined figure for anxiety. The studies behind it disagreed with each other so violently that the pooled result came out at a size no realistic effect reaches, and quoting it would tell you something false about how big this is. The direction is worth acting on. The magnitude is not established.
What this does not promise
Nearly every one of these studies was a single walk with a questionnaire filled in immediately afterwards, in healthy adults with no physical or mental health conditions - and two thirds of the samples were university students. So this is evidence about how you feel at the end of a walk, not about depression, not about anxiety disorders, not about anything a month later, and not about your physical health. Even within mood, the direction was not uniform: results for depression, tranquillity and calmness were mixed. And nobody in any of these studies could be blinded, for the obvious reason that you can see where you are walking, which is part of why the reviewers rated the risk of bias as high.
The other literature - living near green space, and why it cannot settle this
There is a much larger body of work showing that people who live in greener areas are healthier: in a systematic review and meta-analysis of greenspace and physical health, greener areas were linked to lower odds of type II diabetes, of all-cause mortality and of several birth outcomes. It is tempting to hand that to you as the reason to walk through a park. It is not a reason, because it compares places and the people in them. Greener areas also have more money, cleaner air, less noise and more room to move, and nothing in that design separates the greenery from the rest of it. Two more things worth knowing: several of those pooled comparisons found nothing at all - high blood pressure, stroke, systolic blood pressure, dyslipidaemia, asthma - and that review deliberately excluded mental health outcomes altogether, so it is not evidence for anything on the rest of this page.
FAQ
Does the green route actually cause the better mood, or is it just linked to it?
Linked to it, and this page will not say more than that. The design is stronger than most - the setting was assigned, and in most of these studies the same person did both routes - but only some of them randomised properly, none reported whether one walk carried over into the next, and the reviewers rated the overall risk of bias as high. What can be said plainly is that when researchers held the activity constant and changed only the surroundings, the surroundings still made a measurable difference to how people felt. That is a real finding and it is not the same as proof.
How green does it have to be, and for how long?
Lower and shorter than you would expect. The natural settings in these studies were not all wilderness - they included urban parks, grassland, woodland and a regenerated landfill site, and the urban comparisons were ordinary commercial districts and residential streets. The sessions ran from fifteen minutes to an hour. What has not been established is a dose: the review could not analyse duration properly, so there is no threshold to give you, and anyone quoting a specific number of minutes in nature is going beyond this evidence.
What if there is nothing green anywhere near me?
Then this particular lever is not available to you, and it is more honest to say so than to invent a substitute. Nothing in this evidence tests looking at a picture of a forest, a plant on a desk or a window view, so this page makes no claim about those. What it does not change is that the walk itself is still worth taking - the comparison here was always green route against grey route, never walking against not walking. If the greenest thing on your route is a line of street trees or a single square, that is the version of this you have, and it is closer to what was studied than nothing is.
